Start with a Bang!

In the first 15 seconds of any speech, we either captivate our audience from the start or lose them forever. Here are a few opening techniques to make sure you grab your listeners' attention as soon as you begin:

1. Ask A Question. Yes or no questions are the easiest to answer. Thus, they generate an immediate reaction from the audience. Open questions can also be asked. However, they should be kept simple and light so the audience can answer it easily and feel involved.

Example: By simply raising their hands, the audience is immediately engaged in the presentation, and the question has created a real desire to hear what the speaker has to say.

2. Make a Statement. Starting the presentation with a bold statement is a sure-fire way to have an impact on your audience from the beginning.

Example: Here, the speaker gives alarming statistics about bullying in the USA that should prompt the listeners to pay attention.

3. Create a Scenario. The goal here is to help the listeners project themselves through your story, right from the beginning.

Example: This video shows how the speaker invites his audience on a journey to imagine having the ability to time travel.

Make your message stick by using a prop!

Using a prop* during a presentation is a powerful tool in order to make your message stick. Not only does it entertain, but most importantly, it allows the audience to visualize what you talk about, rather than only hearing it.

Here are three quick tips on how you can use props effectively during presentations.

1.Choose an appropriate prop. One that truly supports your key take-away message.

Example: Steve Jobs uses an envelope to prove that the MacBook Air is the thinnest laptop. This instance proves it without a doubt.

2.Pick the right moment to reveal it. Keeping the prop hidden and only revealing it at a chosen moment during the presentation adds an element of excitement to the speech.

Example: Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver uses a wheelbarrow full of sugar cubes to support his point. 13 minutes after the start of the speech. This is a great way to revive the audience halfway through the presentation.

3.Practice with the object. When presenting with a supporting object, there is no room for improvisation. It is essential to rehearse your presentation with it so that you are perfectly comfortable with it.

Example: Professor Chris Bishop's performs a potentially dangerous demonstration, which he has fortunately practiced for.

EnglishBooster présent sur le Salon des Entrepreneurs 2013 pour coacher des créateurs d'entreprise au pitch en anglais

Le 6 et le 7 février 2013, le Salon des Entrepreneurs accueillait au Palais des Congrès de la Porte Maillot plus de 63 000 visiteurs – parmi lesquels de nombreux porteurs de projets de création d'entreprise. En partenariat avec l'association Esprits d'Entreprises et le mouvement 100 jours pour entreprendre, EnglishBooster a pu aider plusieurs jeunes entrepreneurs à pitcher leurs projets en anglais.

Ils ont pu bénéficier des conseils d'un coach confirmé de l'équipe EnglishBooster et se former aux règles essentielles de « l'Elevator Pitch » : comment structurer ses idées, les articuler et les présenter de manière percutante – le tout en anglais. Chaque atelier réunissait trois entrepreneurs et se déroulait en deux parties : 1) phase de discussion, conseil et préparation en trinôme ; 2) une fois prêt, chaque entrepreneur présentait son pitch en anglais, devant une caméra. Objectif : impacter en moins de deux minutes.

L'expérience fut efficace et surtout très utile. « On ne sait jamais quand on peut tomber sur un investisseur potentiel qui ne parle pas Français. Maintenant, je sais que si cela arrive, je serai prêt et impactant », a déclaré XXX, l'un des participants.

Et heureux de voir ces jeunes pitcher leurs business en anglais, décomplexés face à l'anglais et concentrés sur leurs messages. Paris, le 4 février 2013 – EnglishBooster, spécialiste du coaching en anglais pour managers et dirigeants, sera présent sur le Salon des Entrepreneurs les 6 et 7 février après-midi. En association avec le mouvement 100 JOURS POUR ENTREPRENDRE, EnglishBooster animera un atelier ouvert aux jeunes créateurs qui veulent apprendre à pitcher leur projet en anglais. Chaque participant bénéficiera d'un coaching individualisé avant d'enregistrer son pitch en studio.

« Nous sommes heureux de contribuer au mouvement 100 JOURS POUR ENTREPRENDRE et de soutenir ainsi l'entrepreneuriat chez les jeunes. Vendre son projet en moins de trois minutes est un exercice difficile mais incontournable pour tout porteur de projet », déclare Jean-Baptiste Bénard, Président-fondateur d'EnglishBooster.

Si le concept du pitch n'est pas neuf, il s'impose plus que jamais comme le passage obligé de l'entrepreneur. « À l'heure du tout numérique, il faut convaincre toujours plus vite et plus fort. Dans le cadre des activités de notre mouvement, il nous semble essentiel de donner aux jeunes entrepreneurs des outils pour réussir leur pitch », ajoute Diaa Elyaacoubi du mouvement 100 JOURS POUR ENTREPRENDRE.

Pourquoi donc le faire en anglais ?

La première raison est pragmatique : savoir pitcher son projet en anglais permet de toucher un nombre plus important d'investisseurs, de partenaires et clients potentiels – et plus particulièrement dans une capitale comme Paris qui s'est considérablement internationalisée au cours des dix derniers années.

La deuxième raison est plus « contre-intuitive ». « Contrairement à ce que pense une majorité de personnes, un Français peut pitcher avec plus d'impact en anglais qu'en français. Le faire en anglais l'oblige à se concentrer sur l'essentiel : l'objectif de son pitch, ses messages clés, son ‘call-to-action'. Le champ lexical est plus restreint, les mots employés plus simples. Malgré les imperfections linguistiques, le pitch est au final plus marquant », indique Marc Porter, consultant-formateur chez EnglishBooster.

L'atelier sera organisé le 6 février de 14h30 à 17h30 et le 7 février de 14h00 à 17h00 sur l'espace jeune (Stand 285). Les entrepreneurs seront coachés individuellement et en petits groupes de trois personnes.

Thanksgiving : retour aux sources

Tout commence en 1620 lorsque les Pilgrim Fathers décident de coloniser la baie de Plymouth (Massachusetts). Gros problème : les effectifs sont décimés par le scorbut. Fort heureusement, la tribu indienne des Wampanoags leur vient en aide. Au programme : cours de pêche, de chasse et de culture… tout simplement pour pouvoir manger.

Une année plus tard, durant l'automne, le gouverneur en place décrète trois jours d'action de grâce (Thanksgiving). Et les colons invitent la tribu des Wampanoags à venir partager le festin, constitué notamment de dindes !

Cette fête se répand ensuite dans toute l'Amérique. Et c'est en 1789, que le président George Washington décrète le premier Thanksgiving Day dans son célèbre discours :

"Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor— and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.
